Bringing back a Queensbridge Hip-Hop Classic: "Hot Day Mastermix"

Queensbridge, New York-based DJ Hot Day Dante influenced the direction of urban music with mixes that blended hip-hop breaks with R&B. His 1987 12" inch single, "Hot Day Mastermix" blended the classic Issac Hayes breakbeat "Ike's Mood" with the R&B hit of the day, "Once In A Lifetime Groove" by New Edition. Hot Day's blends presented a rawer, hip-hop version of the smoother R&B hits of the day. The R&B and Hip-Hop mixes pioneered by Hot Day inspired more hip-hop-based production on R&B hits by artists such as Mary J. Blige. Hot Day was a hometown hero to the crop of Queensbridge-based rappers coming up in the 80's, including Nas, who has been known to reach out to Hot Day as a Queens rap pioneer. Tuff City reissued "Hot Day Master Mix" by Hot Day. Tuff City also released his debut LP, and collaborations with fellow Queens rapper Blaq Poet as Phd (Poet + Hot Day).
