The Godmother Of Detroit Soul chronologically compiles the 1960's output of Detroit soul singer and entrepreneur Johnnie Mae Matthews. Johnnie Mae Matthews made history and influenced the sound of the city with her 45 releases on her own labels at a time when female-owned record labels were unheard of in Detroit. The Godmother Of Detroit Soul provides an affordable way to enjoy Johnnie Mae Matthews' catalog without spending four figures to acquire it on original pressings. In addition, this compilation includes the unreleased instrumental of the mega-rare "I Have No Choice", sourced from the original tapes. The material on this compilation comes from original 45's, digital transfers provided by Johnnie Mae Matthews before she passed away, and original master tapes.
