Has it been twenty years already? By pitching down a Marva Whitney loop and adding some booming drums underneath in 1988, The 45 King could not have imagined that his minimalist masterpiece, the “900 Number”, would become one of the greatest instrumentals in hip hop history, and would be heard across the globe in movies, live shows, radio stations and sampled in countless hip hop songs. This double LP release is a DJ’s delight, featuring previously unreleased recordings from every hip hop school. The old school is represented with remixes by Mark, The 45 King himself, TC stalwart Maestro as well as essential acapella vocals by posse members Chill Rob G and Latee (who returns with his first commercial release in decades). The release also features the DJ T-Ray mix from the motion picture Hancock, and two Beastie Boys vocal tracks taken from their acclaimed film, Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!, and the live Tibetan Freedom Concert album. The second record features 7 mixes of the number one song inspired by the “900 Number”, DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat”. The project will be old school on every level and will feature a cover by legendary graffiti writer Joey Vega. Vargas worked for Tuff City in the 80’s, and his iconic work has been collected within Scandinavian graffiti magazines. This current piece ranks among his best work.
