The Fabulous Fantoms’ "Just Having A Party" is the best album you’ve never heard from one of the funkiest groups that ever graced the bare-knuckled social and pleasure club scene of New Orleans East in the late 60s and early 70s. The Fantoms could have had the national success of such artists as Kool & The Gang, the Ohio Players, Sly & The Family Stone and their New Orleans contemporaries, the Meters. However, due to a combination of bad timing and missed opportunities they failed to get the recognition that they truly deserved. The Fantoms were a killer live unit, at times consisting of up to 10 members and were renown for their combustible shows. They honed their chops throughout their ten-year career through steady gigging on New Orleans’ night, social and pleasure club circuit, often performing two 2 – 3 hour marathons a night. Through this constant live performance they were able to develop the rarified “dead in-the-pocket” funk sound whose awesomeness has only been heard previously on record with the Meters. “Just Having A Party” is the first commercially released collection of the Fabulous Fantoms’ very rare and supremely funky material. It includes the entire, previously unreleased “Just Having A Party” LP which features the very funky title track, the Stills cover, the Sly & The Family Stone-influenced “I’ll Take You There” and the soulful R&B vamp, “Never Going To Stop Loving You.” Also included are several of the early singles that originally appeared on the Big Deal, Power Funksion and Man labels. The compact disc release will feature several bonus tracks. Now the Fantoms will emerge from the shadow community of hardcore collectors who covet their rare recordings and begin to get the more popular recognition that is truly their due.
"A great batch of New Orleans funk...and a long overdue look at this obscure heavy funk combo." -Dusty Groove
