As the ‘60s turned into the ‘70s, the funk revolution influenced all artists on both sides of a generational divide. While the young artists on one side formed bands that codified the genre, R&B artists on the other side (Kool and the Gang, the Ohio Players) hopped aboard the funk band wagon. This anthology collects a fine body of work by the latter that splits the difference between soulful vocal performance and funk rhythms, yet is still eclectic. From the jazzy “Walkin’ in the Park” by Hermon Hitson to the pure rhythmic workout of the Joe Hunter band to the soulful R&B of Jonnie Mae Matthews, all bases are covered. This album contains unreleased recordings and previously released recordings with extended mixes taken directly from master tapes.
