Bobby Love’s “Rare Herbs” brings to light the career of yet another New Orleans musician whose local success should have been international. Keyboardist, flautist, arranger, bandleader…Love’s recordings cut a broad swath from the ‘60s through the ‘80s: from straight-up jazz to Rick James type electro-funk, but the treasure trove here is a handful of mid to late ‘70s recordings with his group the Uptown Rulers which offer the best most precious examples of Bar-Kays style post dance funk.
