Night Train’s Legendary Labels of Louisiana series has covered a broad spectrum of music from rock ‘n’ roll to rhythm and blues to swamp rock. With the release of the two volume series “The Best Of Chase Records” the genre of New Orleans “oldies but goodies” can be added to the mix. Headed up by New Orleans’ promotion king Stanley Chaisson, Chase released a variety of music from garage rock to R&B, all of which had a pro’s ear for the regional and sometimes national hit. Volume one contains a sumptuous twenty-seven track selection that includes six tracks by local legends The Jokers (including “There’s Got To Be A Girl,” a #1 New Orleans record for 17 weeks) along with tracks by local hit makers The Aubrey Twins. Volume two features two artists whose stars are shining particularly brightly at present, Deacon John and Paul Varisco. Both are headlining this year’s New Orleans JazzFest: Deacon with his mix of R&B and blues and Varisco with his worthy take on 60s rock. We look for this material, unavailable for 35 years, to make its début as a reissue to an eager public at the Virgin jazz tent. A signing is being contemplated for Varisco the afternoon that he headlines.
