Tuff City/Night Train once again puts together a retrospective of the man Allen Toussaint called “The Creole Beethoven” Wardell Quezerque. This compilation explores the wide body of Quezerque’s work from his late 1950s leadership of the Sultans (the previously unreleased “I’m Broke”) to the music he helped create for fellow Crescent City legends Irma Thomas & Willie Tee. From the Popeye-dance sounds of the early 1960s to the funk-soul of the mid 1970s, this collection proves that Mr. Quezerque was anything but square. Bill Dahl of Living Blues writes: “Down in New Orleans only the reverend Allen Toussaint produced as many killer sides as the prolific Wardell Quezerque during the mid- ‘60’s. One listen to the two CD anthology Sixty Smokin’ Soul Senders on the Funky Delicacies logo will convince you that he was Toussaint’s artistic equal too. “
