The Prime Ministers
Night Train International
NTI CD 7148
Night Train Records again restores a missing link to the historical chain of New Orleans music with this release by The Prime Ministers. Recorded live on Bourbon street in 1965, The Prime Ministers were the same posse of funky white boys who produced Dr. John (it is widely known that Barron was originally supposed to take on the "Dr. John" persona. The CD is almost entirely instrumentals save for "How Do You Feel" which features the vocals of Ronnie Barron. This extraordinary record seems like the kind of combo jazz that put Prestige Records on the map yet contains the kind of super rhythmic drumming that is unmistakably New Orleans. Within a year all these players would have moved on to the Dr. John or Al Hirt bands and in the case of Barron be primed for a solo career. We give you here a precious moment in time.
