Dangerous Red Head
Jerry Raines
Night Train International
NTI CD 7089
This 28-track anthology captures the career of an excellent Louisiana rock 'n' roller. Featuring a combination of Raines' band, The Vikings, as well as the cream of New Orleans musicians of the 50s from Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack to Lee Allen and Earl Palmer, "Dangerous Redhead" is a cornucopia of grade-A, rhythm & blues-driven New Orleans Rock 'n' Roll that traces Raines' career from its beginnings in the late 50s through the 70s. All recordings are from master tapes and include many unreleased tracks. "Dangerous Redhead" collects Raines' output for the Drew-Blan, Drew, Starbarn and Haystack labels. Many of the early recordings, including the title track and "Our Teenage Love," were cut at New Orleans' famous Cosimo Studios where almost all of New Orleans' greatest rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues were recorded under the aegis of studio owner and engineer Cosimo "Cosmo" Matassa. The album also includes 10 rare, previously unavailable demos. The liner notes for this beautifully produced package were written by New Orleans-based writer and frequent OffBeat contributor Michael Hurtt. Also included is archival material that documents Raines' three decade career.
